Currently, club standings are based solely on weight of fish caught. Does anyone else think we might benefit from going to a points system? Obviously, catching fish should still hold the highest priority and influence over the points awarded, but with a point-based system we could start rewarding members for club participation and attendance at non-tournament functions (meetings, lake clean-ups, youth fishing events, etc). We could also reward new member referral bonuses and sponsor/donation acquisition.
There are a couple of different ways to go with respect to tournament points. One way, which is basically a weight-based system, is to award a point per ounce (16 points/pound), for example. The second option is to award points based on tournament finish. Here's the finish-based tournament points system we implemented in our club at SIU:
100 Pts - 1st Place
95 Pts - 2nd Place
90 Pts - 3rd Place
85 Pts - 4th Place
80 Pts - 5th Place
75 Pts - 6th Place
70 Pts - 7th Place
65 Pts - 8th Place
60 Pts - 9th Place
55 Pts - 10th Place
50 Pts - All participants with fish
25 Pts - All participants without fish
25 Pts - Big Bass
Each one has its pros and cons. The finish-based system rewards consistency but if someone goes out and catches a 30-pound bag and 2nd place comes in with 5 pounds, that disparity doesn't transfer over -- basically, in that instance a 30-pound sack would carry the same value as a 6-pound bag. But, if that person catches another 30-40 pounds at the next couple of tournaments and then decides not to fish the rest of the year, it's possible that they could still win angler of the year based on total weight even without showing up. The finish based system would place just as much importance for fishing a tough lake (say Long Branch, where 2 fish may be all it takes to win) as it would a good lake (like Show-me, where 5 fish may only be good enough for 7th or 8th).
Anyway, it's just some food for thought right now. We've got several months to think about it if we decide we want to change things up for the 2010 season. If you have any preferences one way or the other, please post a reply.
